Stanley goes to Oz

This afternoon Stanley was on his travels again. This time he skipped over the Indian Ocean and made a stop in Australia. We got out the atlases to look for any interesting landmarks or animals in Australia and made a list. We then cut out small pictures of these things and stuck them onto a map of Australia.

Included were:
  • The Sydney Opera House
  • Uluru
  • The Great Barrier Reef
  • Kangaroos
  • Koala Bears
Here is one group doing their map work:

In our atlases we saw an animal called the Duck-Billed Platypus. We were interested to know why it was called such a strange name and after talking about what it looked like we realised it was because it's mouth looked exactly like a duck's mouth!

We were set a challenge to make our own [something]-Billed Platypus. We spoke about different animals mouths and how we could make an Elephant-Billed Platypus, or a Tiger-Billed Platypus etc..... A lot of good modelling was done but I've yet to see the finished results! We will continue to work on these tomorrow.

We were also finishing off a sheet about Africa flags. We used the world map on the back to find the countries and colour their flags correctly.

A very busy afternoon for P2/3!
